The Silent Pigment Wave: The Biology of Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH)

 PIH vs. True Scars: The Cellular Difference

It is crucial to understand that PIH is not a true structural scar.

  • A scaroccurs when the deeper dermal architecture, including collagen and elastin strands, is physically torn or destroyed, leaving an indentation or raised patch.
  • PIHis simply an uneven, localized over-collection of pigment floating within the top layers of the skin. Because the physical structure of the tissue remains unharmed, PIH can be fully reversed without structural skin filling.
